The “Flip Flop” on Estrogen and Heart Disease

Before 2003, forty observational studies had convinced mainstream doctors that estrogen prevents heart disease in women. It was considered unethical not to offer hormone replacement to post-menopausal women. Therefore, a series of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were done in the 1990’s hoping to confirm this belief. Quite the opposite, these trials were an utter failure, showing either no benefit or harm. This was a severe disappointment to say the least.

Then the “FLIP- FLOP”

Today in May 2012, medical science has again reversed itself to the original position. New data from Women’s Health Initiative Study reveals that estrogen users have dramatically less heart attack and heart disease compared to non-users. Estrogen is protective.
