Use this checklist to note the symptoms you experience. It is not a diagnostic tool, but it can help you describe your experience to your doctor.
Energy and metabolism
- weight loss despite a normal or increased appetite
- feeling hot and sweating easily
- increased thirst
Heart and circulation
- a rapid heartbeat
- palpitations or an irregular heart rhythm
- raised blood pressure
Mind and mood
- anxiety, restlessness or irritability
- difficulty sleeping
- difficulty concentrating
Body
- a fine tremor of the hands
- muscle weakness
- frequent bowel movements
- light or infrequent periods
Eyes and neck
- bulging, sore or gritty eyes (in Graves’ disease)
- swelling at the front of the neck (goitre)
If several of these apply to you, seek medical advice, especially if you have a very fast or irregular heartbeat.
