Case for NDT

Natural desiccated thyroid (NDT) has been used to treat hypothyroidism for more than a century. While levothyroxine is now the standard treatment, a significant number of patients say they only regain their health on NDT. This is TPA’s summary of why NDT should remain a genuine option.

What NDT is

NDT is made from animal thyroid and contains both the storage hormone T4 and the active hormone T3, along with other thyroid components. Because it supplies T3 directly, it can help people whose bodies do not convert T4 well.

Why patients value it

Many patients who remained unwell on T4 alone report that their symptoms improved on NDT, including energy, mood, temperature and cognitive function. For these individuals, the difference in quality of life can be substantial.

The evidence picture

Trials comparing NDT with levothyroxine have generally found similar average results across groups, but a consistent finding is that a proportion of patients prefer NDT and feel better on it. TPA argues that group averages should not override the clear benefit reported by individuals, and that patient experience deserves weight alongside the numbers.

What TPA calls for

We ask that NDT remains available as a treatment option for patients who do not do well on synthetic hormone, that prescribing decisions are made with the patient rather than for them, and that access does not depend on where a person happens to live.
